The Cover Letter I Actually Want to Submit

Hello Potential Employer,

At this point and time in my life, please understand that I am feeling exhausted, beaten down, and slightly depressed at the fact I must go through this job seeking process once again. Though I am a positive and upbeat person in my everyday life, this is a touchy subject for me. More than anything do I want to be employed at a place that gives me the opportunity to do what I am best at, pays and treats me wells, and guarantees me long term employment. However, this is so hard to find!

As you pick up my resume and look at it, you will notice that in fact I HAVE NOT worked at an advertising agency like Wieden + Kennedy. I did not spend a couple years there and then bounce around to various other creative agencies. No, I do not have the “agency experience” directly. However, isn’t that a good thing?!

I am someone who has gone against the grain. I have found opportunities to communicate and influence communities without having to use a big company name for any sort of validation. I have built all of this ON MY OWN! Does this not prove how hard of a worker I am? Does this not prove that even though I’ve been rejected and turned down so many times, that none of that will stop me!? Doesn’t this also prove that if you gave me a chance and invested that opportunity into me, I would stay and constantly work hard for you?

It’s just amazing to me that my friends and coworkers all see how much of a hardworking and successful person I strive to be, yet I never seem to be good enough for a job. I need to have these skills, know more about this and that, I should of worked here and there… the list never ends! How come you can’t recognize the potential from my past experience and offer someone like me a shot? You’re aware that many talented and brilliant minds do not (and may never) work at a well-known advertising agency. Just because someone has worked somewhere “big” before does not at all mean they have half the passion that someone like me does.

Just give me a chance. Meet me in person! I love talking to and meeting new people. But please ask me good questions too. We all know that it is impossible to get along with everyone, but when in a work environment I know how to be polite and productive. Obviously I need money, but I want to work here to satisfy a piece of soul that is tossing and turning. And of course I’m not perfect, I have flaws, but I am open to feedback so that I can learn and change for the better!

I feel I could go on and on, but I sadly must return to applying to jobs that I will be instantly rejected from. If you feel up for doing something different, please let me know! I am more than ready to go!

Thank you,

Lauren

The top five music videos that feature people killing other people.

All of the blood, terror, gore… it’s beautiful.

As an avid horror movie fan, I appreciate a good kill scene. That’s why I’ve done some research to pull up some of the most modern music videos that feature people killing other people in it. These selections were  made based off of the artist direction used and the story behind it, just like any good horror film review.

Please keep in mind that none of these videos may be suitable for viewing while at work.

5) King Fantastic — On Q

King Fantastic is a rap duo that is well-known for pushing the limits. The lyrics to their songs mirror the music videos in providing a raw, shocking, yet sensual appeal to gangster rap. In the music video for “On Q,” King Fantastic toys along with the idea of a bunch of nearly naked ladies playing one of the most interesting games of Russian Roulette. Though some of the deaths are suicides, you can see in the music video how sexy murder can be sometimes.

4) Ty Dolla $ign — Paranoid ft. B.o.B.

From my understanding, Ty Dolla $ign has newly hit the music scene and made sure to make a great impression by creating the music video for his song “Paranoid.” Playing off on a Paranormal Activity III sort of feel, this video features half-naked women who have clearly just finished murdering both Ty and B.o.B. This video does an excellent job of adding an element of fright to this sexy video, while still leaving something left to the imagination. My only complaint is that the party where the girl holds and drops B.o.B.’s head a thousand times is a bit over done. The director should of given the model more direction. Regardless, I love this song and video.

3) King Fantastic — Lost Art of Killing

Making a duplicate appearance on this list, King Fantastic once again proves to be men of their name with the music video for “Lost Art of Killing.” As the song states, this video adds art and a retro sophistication to death. The best part about this video is that it is created to be a short horror film about a family that kills in order to eat and survive. Enjoy.

4) Dada Life — Unleash the Fucking Dada

The complicated story line, the suspense, the implied violence: it’s so well done. This music video is near perfection. You will find yourself watching this video over and over, as it is memorizing watch as it is haunting. You think this girl is innocent and sweet. You think the couple’s interaction is harmless, and then it all happens. This will forever be one of my favorites.

5) HEALTH — We are Water

Though this video features a beyond epic killing scene, the story that builds to it is absolutely gorgeous. This video depicts someone who is representing an innocent child run away from an implied abuser. She finds herself in a situation where it seems she has met her doom, yet turns it around quickly. After the deed, she rips off the blonde wig that symbolizes her innocence to reveal her shorter, darker colored hair. This represents that she has undergone a transformation and is no longer who she once was. By touching on dark subjects like sexual abuse and using it in a something like a short horror film, it creates something that is just breathtaking. Aside from that, this video was created by Eric Wareheim, who is mostly known for his insane works on the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! It goes without saying this will probably be my favorite music video of all time.

Is there another awesome music video featuring people killing other people that I missed? Let me know in the comment section below!

Beyond Honorable Mention

The Shoes – Time to Dance

For reasons unknown, I SOMEHOW forgot about this master piece featuring Jake Gyllenhaal as a morbid killing machine. To be perfectly honest, I can’t think of a better music video for a song like this. Please watch this.

Black lipstick creates buzz in Portland, Ore.

Lipstick; I love it.

The variety of colors, the options, the endless possibility that lie within such a small tube make me so happy. Though I typically am a go-to fan of pinks and reds, I have been seeking new colors for a while.

A couple months ago while enjoying the ambiance of the Fireside in Northwest Portland, a waitress caught my attention with her astounding black lipstick. Immediately, I asked about it to learn a little something about Portland Black Lipstick Company. Locally made in a garage with natural ingredients, Portland Black Lipstick offers very affordable ($10-12) and AMAZING colors to choose from. After doing some research, I learned that Blush Beauty Bar sells these amazing lipsticks. However, due to the popularity, these things sell out very fast and I had to be placed on a waiting list in order to purchase some colors.

On Sunday March 23rd at around 3 PM, I had received a phone call that MY BLACK LIPSTICK HAD ARRIVED! With much excitement, I got myself together and into Blush Beauty Bar. With the help of my SUPER COOL friend Patty, I tried on a few colors and immediately decided that the black was a necessary purchase.  I really liked the other colors, but had a hard time committing right then and there. Before leaving the store, I put the black lipstick on and decided to grace the streets of Portland with my [gothic appearing] presence. Without thinking about it before, I unknowingly created a LOT of buzz about wearing such a bold color.

My friend who was with me gave me his approval of this new lipstick before we ventured off. He checked with both his sunglasses on and off to make sure that this didn’t look “bad” or “too weird.” After taking a selfie, I had to agree that yes it may be different, but it wasn’t a terrible look at all. He did recommend that I stick to wearing this color out at night with dark eyeshadow, rather than with a more plan face during a sunny Sunday afternoon.

As I stepped onto NW 23rd towards Glisan in my all black outfit with matching lips, I immediately caught the attention of nearly everyone on the crowded sidewalks. Some people looked at me out of non-judgmental curiosity, others looked as though they didn’t know what to think about the color, while all of the packed tables outside of McMenamins Blue Moon Tavern laughed and pointed at me. Though this annoyed my friend who wanted to slap everyone (which I’m thankful that he would of stood up for me like that), I was incredibly amused at all the buzz my lipstick was creating.

As if I care that people laugh because I look different.

Without fail, this new lipstick made heads turn all over Portland. The closer I got towards Downtown, the less people stared.  I did receive more verbal compliments from people in that area than the sneers from Knob Hill. I am very certain that Southeast, Northeast, and North Portland would take kindly to this color of lipstick as well.

Portland Black Lipstick Company is increasing its customer base in a shocking amount of time and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more people out wearing darker lip colors as part of an everyday look. For all I know, this could be the new trend to stay on top of. At least, I’m going to keep wearing my black lipstick; I love it!

I think that this blue will be my next purchase. The only reason why I look so upset in this picture is because I didn’t buy it yesterday, I totally should have.

What do you think? What are your thoughts on black/colored lipstick? Please share!

I actually did everything I wanted to this weekend, and it was great!

Friday afternoon I had the following agenda lined up:

  • Clean the apartment
  • PARTY PARTY PARTY
  • Lay in bed all day
  • Get a [slightly used, but wonderful] iPhone
  • Play outside

And some how, I managed to accomplish each and every single one!

Cleaning the apartment came easier than expected. After seeing a couple Swiffer commercials, I decided that I NEEDED to buy one. Ten minutes later, I owned one and I could NOT WAIT to mop my floors. However, I was beyond surprised to realize that you apparently need batteries. Once that ordeal was dealt with, my floors were clean and made my whole apartment smell a lot better.

Shortly after cleaning, I made a dash to Southeast Portland and had just an “interesting” evening. It all started at Church, where we invaded the [at the time] broken photo booth. It was pretty fun and allowed for some questionable photos. After that, we continued to bar hop the SE area before finishing off (somehow) in Northwest Portland.

The next day, I “accidentally” missed my cycling class and was forced to stay in bed watching terrible TV until it was about 3 PM. Then, it was time to get ready. At precisely 6 PM, a friend called me about meeting up somewhere so that I could purchase their old iPhone 4 that was in perfect condition. Within seconds of receiving that call, I ran to meet him and instantly activated the phone. To say the least, I am very happy to finally have a decent working [smart]phone and am excited to be a part of the iPhone community. Of course, I have already taken a substantial amount of pictures of myself to shameless share with everyone. A perfect example of this can be seen below.

Sunday was absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to be outside all day. Thankfully, my friend Tyler felt the same way. He walked over to my apartment, we left to take care of a couple shopping errands, then ate outside at McMenamins Blue Moon Tavern. After a couple hours off good beers and listening in on the weird girls behind us, we set off for a walk around town. As we were making our way back towards Downtown, I discovered what could quite possibly be my new favorite place. Though some squatter was rambling about stupid stuff outside of it’s closed doors, the Angry Pigeon Gallery offered a lot of promise and I can’t wait to see what’s inside.

The sun was starting to set and Tyler had a great idea; we headed to Council Crest Park. This was a perfect way to end the day. The view was gorgeous, and that echo-ey thing was pretty neat too. But then it started to get a little too cold, and we thought to counteract that by going out for ice cream and milkshakes before heading home to watch the Walking Dead.

beautifulday

To say the least, I had a wonderful weekend. I’m very excited to see what next weekend has in store!
